This year was our second season in NIHL1, where we were looking to build on a successful first campaign in. We reached the semifinals of the cup again, finished with a winning record, improved our goal difference and placed one spot higher than last season. I had hoped to make the final four in the playoffs, but it was not to be.
Last Sunday both teams played their part in a great playoff matchup. There is nothing better in sports than playoff hockey, especially when it goes to overtime. It was fitting the game went to an extra period given our last two games in Deeside had ended in the same fashion. Unfortunately, it was not our night, but the players who dressed this weekend gave everything they had, and we fell short by the smallest of margins. There will be lessons learned and experience gained for both the players and coaches, who will be looking to improve again next season.
Midweek the issue with Deeside naming an ineligible player cropped up and I am pleased that it was dealt with quickly with common sense prevailing. We reached out to England Ice Hockey as soon as we were made aware that an investigation was underway and stated unequivocally that Deeside should remain in the playoffs. They had won the game on the ice, with the player in question not getting any ice time. The last thing we wanted was either Jets to advance to the semi-finals due to an admin error or Billingham advance straight through to the final.
Off the ice, this season has been a huge success and we have made great progress.
Thank you to all our wonderful sponsors who have bought into our vision of being an affordable and engaging part of the local community.
At Jets we have the most amazing group of volunteers who give up their time to be part of this great club. We frequently receive great feedback from first time fans and opposition supporters as to their experience on game nights. There are so many people to list individually, which shows how much we have grown over the last few years.
Along with the digital team, who have produced outstanding content across all our social media platforms and continue to work on new stuff throughout the off season.
Dave has continued with his excellent camera work, meaning we get a quick turnaround on video analytics / instat; we are currently the only side in NIHL1 that provide this for our players and coaches. The last few games of the season saw Don join us on the microphone and us producing a live stream. Again, the only side in NIHL1 that does this free of charge.
I must say a huge thank you and acknowledge the relentless work carried out by Alisa and Maverick. The community work has been a real proud moment over the last season. We have been in the Lord Mayors Christmas Parade, welcomed several local sporting teams to watch a game, hosted high profile local businesses, hosted and attended kids’ parties as well as collaborating with other teams to increase the game night experience for fans both at Hull Arena and on the road.
All in all, it has been a long season on and off the ice, enjoy your summer and keep your eyes on Jets socials. Details of the presentation evening will be out shortly.
